If there is a murder committed, all of the students gather in a courtroom and try to use evidence and logic to try and solve the cases. The “action” sequences come from the class trials. It takes a little getting used to and could be frustrating at times, but overall it’s inoffensive. Instead, moving the left analog stick to the right rotates the camera, just like the right analog stick. The walking mechanics are a little strange, with no left and right strafing options. When you aren’t reading (which is a vast majority of the game), you wander the halls of Hope’s Peak Academy. This includes dialogue with other characters, interactions with items in the environment, or Makoto’s/Hajime’s thoughts regarding the current situation.
Through important plot developments, the game guides you through as you endlessly click the X button to go from text box to text box.

The Danganronpa series plays out as a visual novel, so most of the interaction is through conversing with other characters. Unlike the first game, where you knew your character’s ultimate ability, you are clueless as to what makes Hajime Hinata, your playable character in the sequel, part of Hope’s Peak Academy. The cast is somehow stranger than the preceding group, and new “Ultimates” like “Ultimate Mechanic” and “Ultimate Nurse” help separate this group from the last. This time, the black and white bear announces himself as the school’s headmaster, and he reintroduced his killing game to a whole new cast. Of course, that is only until Monokuma shows up to take over.
